Ori-Brick

w/ Hans Papke

Ori (or "Oru" Japanese- fold) - Brick is an installation at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. The Ori-Brick is an origami enabled form, made with concrete using thin plastic sheets folded using origami principles. A thin, semi-ridged polymer sheet is not typically considered as a structural material when casting concrete. Through digital design & fabrication of origami crease patterns, single sheets were folded with into shapes that could withstand the forces of concrete-foam composite slurry. Control, versatility and scalability are demonstrated through the installation of zig-zagging dwarf wall (3ft tall & 10ft long) composed of over 100 individual bricks.
